SFSC 2-Man Comp Recap

Our local club SFSC recently held a 2 man competition this past weekend and needless to say I was super excited to partake in it. This is the same event I won first place in a few years ago; it was also my first time attending an event ever. As the weeks got closer I made the decision to set my competitive nature aside (something that was really hard for me to do) and instead of going to win that I would be going to have a great day with my 6 year old son. I have taken my son out a few times and he has enjoyed it each time. I even bought him his own truck a used Tamiya CR01. Sadly his truck was broken and I was not able to get the parts I needed to fix it in time.

I decided to dust off my AX10 Deadbolt and let him use that instead. Ironically that is the truck I won for taking first place in the first 2 man event I attended years ago. Saturday came and I rushed to get everything ready for us to make the best of the day together. I had a spare Scalerfab hat which I gave him to match my Team Driver hat and he thought that was the coolest thing ever. He was also super excited to get to drive my Deadbolt since he knows that truck means a lot to me. I grabbed my trusty old blue Scalerfab comp truck along with a few other rigs and out the door we went.

The weather was great that day and I was lucky enough to setup under a tent with a few friends. We arrived a little a later than I had hoped and grabbed the number 8 team spot. I was worried that since my son being six and being a boy would have a hard time waiting for all of the other teams to go ahead of us. Luckily a few other drivers brought their kids along so most of the day was spent watching him and the others play as kids often do.

When it was finally our turn we lined our trucks up and got to work. I had forgotten that the remote on my son’s truck is smaller and easier for him to use compared to the stock AX3 remote on the Deadbolt. This resulted in him having some trouble finding reverse which he often needed to use. We got about half way through the comp before catching up to the group in front of us. By this point my son was starving as it was now 3 O’clock in the afternoon and the small breakfast sandwich we ate at 8 am had now worn off. His attention began to wane and coupled with the frustration of using the larger remote, I could tell that having to wait while the other 2 teams finished in front of us wasn’t going to sit well with him. I opted for us to jump out of the competition in lieu of eating some pizza for lunch.

So that’s what we did! We ate pizza and watched as the other teams worked the course and honestly I didn’t mind one bit. It’s hard for me not to be extremely competitive in everything I do but I figured sitting there eating pizza with my son and enjoying the sport at his pace instead of mine was totally worth it. We finished off the day by running a few packs through his absolutely favorite RC truck of all, his rare Traxxas Sonuva Digger monster truck over on the U4 course. I didn’t win any points in the competition that day but hopefully I won a few cool points with my son.
